What is Soulsa?

Soulsa ® is an amalgamation of the words Soul and Salsa.

Anyone who has a deep passion for music feels it from the soul...hence our slogan: Salsa from the soul! (Salsa del alma! in Spanish).

The Soulsa ® project came into being when two individuals from completely different cultural backgrounds discovered a shared liking for Salsa Dura, which first surfaced in swinging sixties New York and peaked in popularity during the seventies. Salsa Dura (Hard or classic Salsa in English) was essentially the marriage of genres and rhythms drawn from Cuba, Puerto Rico and some of the other islands in the Caribbean with the high-tempo, drive and improvisational techniques picked up by Latino immigrants in New York.

The colours we use are Gold and Burgundy Red. The Gold represents the Soul. It also symbolises a time period that is arguably accepted as the golden era of Latin American music. The Burgundy Red represents Salsa. Like good vintage red wine, we believe that the particular brand of Salsa we promote will undoubtedly become more appreciated over time!

Our main objective is to pay homage to many of the artists whose music truly captured the essence of Salsa Dura. We aim to recreate this particular sound by hosting concerts and gigs around London.

We also seek to redefine the relationship between the music and the dance form in Salsa. The dance can be seen as the translation, in terms of bodily action, of the music from which it is derived. The hypothesis of our project is to prove that without the music, there can be no dance. Through this ideology, we hope to arouse further interest in the music, its historical past, as well as its structural development.
